How is it a person who works out on a regular basis along with, constant Martial arts training,,,,,,?

Still be fat and, have a large gut?

I'm referring to Roy Nelson of the ultimate fighter on Spike.

I also have noticed this with other Athletes and, even with average Joes who get plenty of exercises. Wouldn't this dismiss the stereotype that overweight people are lazy?

Here's the thing, that gut may not be fat at all. I have a friend who's into martial arts who is 5'7" and weighs around 210 lbs. He looks fat to most people, when actually his body fat index indicates 10%... which is usually considered in shape. He trains capoeira or jujitsu four times a week, weight lifts at least 3 days, and runs at least 5 days. Currently he's training for a half marathon.
I know that to myself I still look fat... and I'm training about the same... with around 8% body fat. 5'8" and 160 lbs. I figure some if has to do with the fact that I studied breathing techniques in early years of martial arts, and to "properly" breath you need to use your abdominal muscles... that in itself leads to larger and stronger abs... and also makes you look "fat."
